Google is the biggest, and for some websites, can account for 30-50% of their traffic. But, like all things that people depend upon, that gives Google the power to mess you up if you don't follow their rules, or if you happen to have a site that is affected by an update.
Most of the things that are general to Google apply to search
engines as a whole. There are people out there though who make a
living on topics that are specific to Google, so we have included

When people talk about PageRank, they often mean Google also. Sure, other search engines rank you, but other than Alexa, they don't publish a rank. And contrary to popular opinion, high pagerank does not translate into instant traffic. In a very crowded niche, Pagerank 6 may still turn up on page 100 of the search results, and in a high demand, under supplied niche, Pagerank 0 may still show up on page 1! The law of supply and demand still works, no matter what number Google puts on your page.
