Search Engine Optimization and Marketing pros are right up there with used car salesmen and computer repair pros in trustworthiness. Not that there aren't good ones out there, it is just that they have expertise that the average person does not, which means they can feed you a line and you'll never know the difference. And there are enough scammers out there with just that objective, that it makes even the good ones look bad.

Personally, I prefer to hire someone who will take the time to explain well enough that I can make the choice. I also research what they tell me to insure that the information IS trustworthy. I even do this with my doctor (drives him NUTS!), because I like to be informed.

If an expert disagrees with you, they should be able to explain why. If something sounds too good to be true, it is. And hiring without doing some checking ahead of time from multiple sources is setting yourself up to be the duck
